No Ka Oi Surf School was founded by Willy Keokalani Shim, who also created Imua Maui Nei after losing his surf school and home in the fires. In many ways, Imua Maui Nei represents the soul and mission behind the school’s rebirth—not just to teach surfing, but to offer a deeper experience rooted in healing, culture, and community restoration.
Willy uses surfing as a vessel to share the rich tapestry of Hawaiian culture and the spirit of ‘mana.’ Getting back in the water and sharing his passion for surfing with others is where Willy finds his strength and peace. “That’s because surfing has saved my life. Thank the Lord I have the opportunity to teach surfing, because it’s a great healer.”
